Matfen Hall serves up Afternoon Tea for Percy Hedley pupils
A group of pupils from Percy Hedley School in Newcastle have been dining in style at Matfen Hotel.
The Key Stage Three pupils at the school, which educates children with additional needs, were invited to the hotel as part of an enterprise project, which would culminate in them putting on a special afternoon tea at the school for their families.
After researching the origins of Afternoon Tea and looking at recipes, speech and language class teacher, John Strachan got in touch with Matfen Hall to see whether there would be an opportunity for the children to visit the Hotel and enjoy the full afternoon tea experience.
And staff were delighted to welcome them before serving up Matfen’s signature Afternoon Tea.
Mr Strachan said: “We always try and give the children as many practical experiences as possible so I was absolutely thrilled when Matfen Hall came back and said they’d be happy to welcome us up there for Afternoon Tea. It was fantastic.”
Before visiting Matfen Hall, the pupils all got suitably dressed up for the occasion and Mr Strachan said the students behaviour was exceptional throughout the visit.
He added: “We spoke a lot about etiquette and behaviour ahead of the trip and the children, who all have social communication difficulties, behaved amazingly well and absolutely loved everything about it.
“The staff at Matfen were wonderful and made the visit very special for us all.”
After experiencing a first class Afternoon Tea first hand, the Year 8 and 9 pupils were well prepared to put on their own special version for their parents and other family members.
Mt Strachan, said: “There’s no doubt they were inspired by the afternoon they enjoyed at Matfen – we can’t thank them enough.”
Victoria Paterson, Sales and Revenue Manager at Matfen Hall, said, “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome the children and staff from Percy Hedley School and we’re delighted they enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed having them.
“Our Kids Afternoon Tea option is really popular and we’re thrilled we were able to provide some inspiration for the lovely event they had planned for their families.”
