Couples are falling in love with Matfen Hall’s new wedding spaces
A £250,000 investment is already paying off for couples who have chosen Matfen Hall Hotel as their wedding venue.
Earlier this year, the award winning Northumberland hotel opened the doors on its newly renovated wedding and event spaces, after the refurbishment of the East Wing.
The luxurious transformation, managed by North East interior designers and architects, Space ID, coupled the impressive, historic features of the Great Hall, Sir Edwards’ Bar and Terrace Room with new, modern touches as the venue embarks on its next chapter.
Bernard Bloodworth, managing director of Matfen Hall, said: “We decided to renovate the spaces based on feedback from some of our wedding couples, which we take very seriously. So far, the new interior of the East Wing has been very well received by everyone who has seen it.
“We wanted to create an air of luxury and introduce some modern touches, so that the wedding and event spaces reflect the impressive and unique feel you would expect from a well-established venue like Matfen Hall.”
Sunderland couple Michaela and Stephen Lordon, who had their big day on Saturday, March 10th, were one of the first to get married at Matfen following the refurbishment and were thrilled with the result.
Michaela says: “When we viewed Matfen, we knew there was nowhere else that we would want to get married. We loved everything about it and this was prior to any plans being released for the refurbishment.
“When I received the email about the renovations, my heart skipped a beat. I admit I was nervous and I had a million questions. Would it look different to what we fell in love with? What if we didn’t like it anymore?
“But when we received the plans we were overjoyed. We loved it. It was bright, fresh and more modern while making sure the existing features of Matfen were still a huge part of it. It was better than we ever imagined and couldn’t believe we were so lucky to be one of the first weddings in the new refurbishment.”
The renovations included emphasising the theatrical space in the 250 capacity Great Hall, by creating a virtual firework display of contemporary lighting on the spectacular original, oak ceiling. The sweeping oak staircase has been carpeted in opulent teal, to complement the antique mirror arches and rose window.
For Stephen, the transformation of Sir Edward’s Bar was his favourite. Guests are now greeted with textured wall finishes in rich blues and greens, accented with artisan brass metalwork and Italian marble to provide a relaxing and intimate space for socialising.
He says: “It was a much more modern design,” he says. “I liked the colours and how it suited everyone from young to old and it was a very popular room on our wedding day.”
Meanwhile, Michaela was very taken with the Terrace Room, where the muted colours of the decorative plasterwork on the high ceilings match the panelled walls, inset with crystal cut antiqued mirror panels. Bespoke gold ring seats and traditional Versailles timber flooring panels complete the look, while the original Jacobean windows frame the spectacular backdrop of Matfen Hall gardens and golf course.
She says: “I liked that room originally when we viewed Matfen, but with the carpet gone and the mirrors making it feel brighter, it has just really opened up the room to a beautiful bright and airy space. It felt like it was twice as big than when we had originally seen it.”
Victoria Paterson, Wedding and Events Manager at Matfen, says: “We’ve been absolutely delighted with the reaction we’ve had to the refurbishment. The blend of modern touches with the traditional features throughout our wedding and event spaces seem to have struck the right chord with everyone.”
Michaela and Stephen certainly couldn’t be happier, and are looking forward to many getting back to Matfen as much as they can. “We plan on returning to Matfen a lot, especially on our anniversary. We are due to have a baby any day and can’t wait to take them back with us.”
