Welcome to Matfen Hall
We are delighted to announce a quarter of a million pound refurbishment programme of the East Wing at Matfen Hall Hotel and Spa. We pride ourselves as being the leading wedding venue in the North East and we are very excited to share the plans for our stylish new look.
This investment will transform the Great Hall, Terrace Room and Sir Edwards Bar, and will be completed by the end of February 2018. We are working with the talented interior designers Space ID, who are Newcastle based, though they have completed some incredible projects across the UK.
Plans are revealed for the luxurious new look East Wing.
The Great Hall
Entering the theatrical space that is the Great Hall, eyes will be drawn to the spectacular original oak ceiling, sensitively highlighted with led lights and suspended contemporary orbs of light creating a virtual firework display overhead.
A dance of coloured light will spill over the bespoke gold ring seats from the original rose window. The sweeping oak staircase with teal carpet runner and brass stair rods wraps around the room, reflected in the antique mirror arches.
The magnificent Great Hall is a spectacular backdrop for your civil wedding.
“Nothing was too much trouble and everything was absolutely perfect on the day, we couldn’t have wished for a better venue or a better day…”
Lorraine & Lewis
Sir Edward’s Bar
Leading from the Great Hall, to the left the guests will be entertained within the dark, sumptuous cocktail lounge with crystal lights, enveloping wingback chairs and relaxing music.
Sir Edward’s Bar provides a relaxing space, with textured wall finishes, in rich blues and greens accented with artisan brass metalwork on the bar counter.
Relax in timeless elegance in the sumptuous surroundings of Sir Edward’s bar.
“Everybody at Matfen Hall has gone above and beyond for us from start of the planning process all the way through to our check out on Saturday.”
Lisa & Paul
The Terrace Room
Leaving Sir Edward’s Bar, guests will be guided to the piece de resistance, The Terrace Room. The original Jacobean windows with centuries old timber paneling frame the spectacular backdrop of Matfen Hall gardens and golf course.
The high ceilings adorned with decorative plasterwork, sympathetically picked out in muted colours to match the panelled walls inset with crystal cut antique mirror panels.
The grandeur of the Terrace room lets you celebrate in style with family and friends.
“Every detail was absolutely perfect from getting my ridiculously specific pumpkin placements right, to the beautiful gift we received in our room…”
Georgia & Chris

Matfen Hall is built
Matfen Hall was completely rebuilt in 1832-6 on the site of an earlier Jacobean house by Sir Edward Blackett, the 6th baronet.
The hotel officially opens
Following a major programme of work the Hall was opened as a hotel in 1999. The hotel is owned and operated by Sir Hugh Blackett (12th baronet) and his wife Anna.
Major expansion programme
The hotel expanded to 53 rooms following a large investment and extension which also provided extensive spa and leisure facilities.
Terrace room extension completed
The original archway in the room challenged us with larger wedding parties, therefore we took the decision this year to double it in size creating a more open plan look to the room.
Vault Bar / Cloister Refurbishment
Recognising the Impact that the investment had in the Terrace Room, our Vault and Cloister was the next to undergo a stylish and modern redesign.
Large Hotel of the Year 2015
At a glitzy award ceremony at the Sage in Gateshead, we were delighted to be awarded the prestigious gold award and win Large Hotel of the Year at the Visit England Awards.
