Julia Vasic and Sarah Hagn from Austria have been working at Matfen Hall this summer

Visiting from Austria to live and work at Matfen Hall

At Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa, we’re always delighted to welcome young people from overseas to come and spend some time working with us.

This year, we have two young women from Austria – Julia Vasic and Sarah Hagn – who have spent the summer living and working at the hotel. Both Julia and Sarah have been working as waitresses in our Library Restaurant.

We asked them a few questions about how they’ve enjoyed their time in Northumberland and their plans for the future.

Name: Julia Vasic, 18 from Tyrol in Austria

Is this your first time in the UK?
Yes.

What were your first impressions of Northumberland and Matfen Hall?
A beautiful landscape, where you can dangle your soul and relax yourself.

What is your role at the hotel?
I am working in the Library Restaurant as a waitress.

What made you want to come and spend time working at Matfen Hall?
The surroundings in general and the good review from the two girls, who were here last year.

How did you get the opportunity to come and work in the UK?
We have the chance to complete an internship in our school.

What have been your favourite things about living and working in Northumberland?
The beautiful landscape and the good working atmosphere in the hotel.

How have you been spending your free time since you’ve been here?
I spend my leisure time most of the time in Newcastle, and when I am not in Newcastle, I like to go for a walk here in Matfen.

Are you enjoying your time working at Matfen Hall?
Yes, it is really nice. It’s my first experience of working in hospitality.

What are you hoping to get out of your time at Matfen Hall?
More independence and I wish that my English will improve.

What are your ambitions for the future?
To get the A-levels!

 

Name: Sarah Hagn, 17, from Salzburg in Austria

Is this your first time in the UK?
No, it’s my second time.

What were your first impressions of Northumberland and Matfen Hall?
I thought it’s like a castle, a bit royal and definitely somewhere in the nowhere.

What is your role at the hotel?
I work in the Library Restaurant.

What made you want to come and spend time working at Matfen Hall?
Our school, I have to make an internship for about 12 Weeks.

How did you get the opportunity to come and work in the UK?
About our school, because of the internship opportunity.

What have been your favourite things about living and working in Northumberland?
The area around the hotel is very beautiful for running. And the very, very nice people 🙂

How have you been spending your free time since you’ve been here?
I use the Spa, running, shopping in Newcastle, sightseeing – I have been to Edinburgh also.

Are you enjoying your time working at Matfen Hall?
Yes, the working atmosphere is very enjoyable.

Did you have any experience of working in hospitality before arriving at Matfen?
Yes, two summers before I worked in the restaurant as well.

What are you hoping to get out of your time at Matfen Hall?
A lot of experience, I hope my knowledge in English will be better after the summer.

What are your ambitions for the future?
My ambitions are to complete the internship with a lot of good experience and back at home after the summer I have to complete my final exams in the Kitchen & Service Industry.
