Matfen Hall named Large Hotel of the Year at North East Tourism Awards
Everyone at Matfen Hall is absolutely delighted that the Hotel was honoured at the recent North East Tourism Awards (NETA) 2020.
Just a few weeks after being named as the UK’s Best Stately Home Wedding Venue at the UK Wedding Awards 2020, the Hotel was awarded Gold in the NETA category of Large Hotel of the Year during the ceremony, which for the first time took place virtually due to the UK-wide Covid-19 lockdown.
Each year, the Awards shine a light on the cream of the region’s tourism industry, offering a glowing list of the best of the best when it comes to visitor attractions, hotels, B&Bs and pubs situated all over the North East.
Andy Hook from Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle was the mystery shopper, charged with selecting the winning Large Hotel from the North East shortlist.
Describing why Matfen Hall stood out from an outstanding group of finalists, he said it was “a real home from home” with warm and friendly staff.
“It is an elegant large hotel in immaculately manicured grounds with an interior as unique as its exterior,” he continued, “With grand halls, period sitting rooms and perfectly proportioned spa.”
Following the announcing of the winners, Sarah Green, chief executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which organises the awards, said: “A huge congratulations to this year’s winners and all those who continue to contribute so much to the North East tourism sector.”
As well as the prestige which comes with the honour of being named the region’s best Large Hotel, the Gold Award also serves as an invitation to the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2020, which trumpet the best tourism businesses across England.
Bernard Bloodworth, Managing Director, said: “The North East is blessed to have such a great number of top rate, luxury independent hotels and we are delighted to be among them.
“This award is a tremendous source of pride for everyone at the Hotel and we look forward to the national ceremony, which will also take place virtually, later in the year.”
Currently closed until the end of May due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all of the staff at Matfen Hall, which is owned by Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett, are looking forward to coming back together to celebrate being named the North East’s Large Hotel of the Year with guests, members and each other.
Lady Blackett, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Matfen Hall has been declared Large Hotel of the Year. It is a tribute to our staff and their dedication and hard work.
“This is a marvellous ray of sunshine in these very challenging times and we can’t wait to welcome you all back.”
